Welcome to the Feng Shui & Chinese astrology blog on www.laurentlanglais.com. In this article I will explain to you which areas of your house or business should not be disturbed in 2017, and which can be used or enhanced. Those sectors are determined by the energy of the year and a combination of Feng Shui and astrological movements.
In this article I give you the good and bad sectors for the Feng Shui of 2017. A challenging sector could affect you if you disturb it. This can be done in several ways :
- if your main door or bedroom is located in it
- if you play loud music or bang a door in these sectors (depends of the day)
- If you renovate your home or business in these areas
- If there is close construction work in your neighbourood in these directions
2017 is, for Chinese astrology, the Yin Fire Rooster year. The Rooster is one of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac. It represents a specific year, that is 2017. But it also represents a location and direction. The Rooster as a sign is located in the West; more precisely it is the direction West 2, . The location of the Rooster in the West means that this sector receives a strong Chi (energy) in 2017. The opposite direction, East is also « special » for that year. There are other calculations to determine additional sectors and I’ll walk you through them.
How are the good and bad Feng Shui sectors of 2017 determined?
Like every year, the Chi of the year brings different sectors and directions that are better left undisturbed, while some other can be very beneficial. How are those good and bad sectors determined? By something called the annual afflictions, as well as by the position of the Flying Stars.
The annual afflictions are in details:
- the Tai Sui or Grand duke Jupiter ;
- the Sui Po or year breaker ;
- the San Sha or three killings
- the 5 yellow, an annual Flying Star.
To understand, you have to see that Feng Shui and Chinese astrology are connected: one speaks about space, the other time. They constantly interact together. For example, our living spaces are influenced by the time events. In macro Feng Shui for example, the shapes of mountains and the placement of rivers and oceans for a given city become auspicious or challenging depending of the time period we are in. We are currently in period 8 until the end of 2023. Besides the period, each year brings a specific Chi and determine good and bad sectors and direction for the Feng Shui of that year…You can see what they were in 2016 in this article: Feng Shui 2016: good & bad directions for the Monkey year.
A bit of history then: how were those locations determined? Originally, by studying the orbit of Jupiter that takes 12 years = 12 different positions in the sky on a circular axis. Jupiter is considered to be a divinity in Chinese cosmology, called the Great Duke Jupiter or Tai Sui. Where Jupiter “sits” in regard to the Earth axis for a given year is the location of the associated zodiac sign and energy of the year.
Tai Sui, Sui Po, San Sha, 5 yellow: the Feng Shui of 2017.
The Rooster sign and its specific Chi will stay with us for 12 months. Chinese metaphysics use a calendar that accounts for both lunar and solar time. In the lunar calendar, this Chinese New Year starts on the Saturday the 28th of January. For the solar calculation, it will start on the 4th of February 2017. To be on the safe side, best is to already following the auspicious/challenging sectors guide from the date of the 29th of January onward.
As previously mentioned, the Rooster sign also occupies a precise location in space. The “Fire” of this Fire Rooster year is not what matters here. What matters is the animal of the Chinese zodiac and where it usually “sits”. On the Chinese compass, the Rooster sign is actually located in the West 2 sector (262.5 – 277.5). What it means is that West 2 is where the energy of this specific year “resides” in 2017.
Tai Sui: the Grand Duke Jupiter location in 2017.
West 2 is therefore a sector and direction under the Tai Sui, or the Grande duke Jupiter affliction. It basically means that it should be left undisturbed the whole year as its energy is too strong. Some Feng Shui practitioners will only account for the precise sector that is West 2. Realistically, most of you don’t know where West 2 will be in their house; but you can figure out which room occupies the West sector. So I always prefer to consider that the whole sector should be left undisturbed…
The Tai Sui or Grand Duke Jupiter is in the West in 2017. The first “bad” sector to not disturb in 2017, year of the Fire Rooster, is West.
Sui Po: the year breaker location in 2017.
Then we move to the second location. This one occupies the sector that is, direction wise, directly opposite to the energy/location of the year’s sign. If the year’s Rooster is in West 2, then the opposite sector to no disturb is….wait for it…East 2! Easy isn’t it? The Rabbit sign occupies this location and so it also explains why people born under this sign have to be “cautious” in 2017. You will be able to read my 12 Chinese signs predictions very soon on this blog.
This opposite location is known as the Sui Po or “Year breaker”. The Rabbit occupies East 2 in (82.5- 97.5). By extension, the whole East sector is best left undisturbed to be on the safe side.
The Sui Po or year breaker affliction is in the East in 2017. The second “bad” sector to not disturb in 2017, year of the Fire Rooster, is East.
San Sha: the 3 Killings location in 2017.
Then we move to the next affliction known as the 3 Killings, or San Sha in Chinese. Don’t worry about the name: Chinese metaphysics like spectacular names, but it doesn’t means something as bad the “3 killings” would happen to you if you disturb it…
This sector is determined by something a bit more technical, so follow me if you are not familiar with Chinese metaphysics. In Chinese astrology, Feng Shui but also medicine, we work with the theory of the 5 Elements (or 5 phases). It is merely a name that states that the Chi takes five different primary energies…Each of the 12 astrological signs that can rule a year belong to one of those Elements, and to something called an “Elemental frame”. An Elemental frame are 3 signs puts together that “create” the Element. There is an Elemental frame for Water, Wood, Fire and Metal; none for the Earth that is “special” (leave here alone, she’s special!). And so, 4 Elemental frames of 3 signs = 12 astrological signs of course…
Last year’s Monkey belonged to the Water Frame. This year’s Rooster belongs to the Metal frame. It is actually the peak of the Metal Element. The Metal is born into the Snake sign, reaches its peak in the Rooster, and is then stored in the Ox sign.
Ok! So, as those three signs all occupy a position, a “sector” inside a direction, drawing the frame between the three gives us a triangle. The San Sha is basically the sector that is directly opposite the peak of this frame. If you have a super-fast mind, you have already worked out that the peak of this triangle is the Rooster and that the San Sha is this year also in the East. East is therefore affected this year by two afflictions: the San Po and the San Sha. It is not a good sector to be or to renovate…
The San Sha or three killing afflctions is in the East in 2017. The third “bad” sector to not disturb in 2017, year of the Fire Rooster, is East. It is afflicted twice this year and is therefore very sensitive…
5 yellow flying star in 2017
And finally, we have the location of the Flying stars. If you are not familiar with the term, think of the flying stars as some form of “Chinese numerology” that determines good and back sector depending of where the numbers fall each year. The numbers, of course, represent a specific Chi at work and not just numbers…
While technically all 9 Flying stars have their influence, the two major ones we look at are the 8 and the 5 first and foremost. The 5 yellow annual Flying Star, that is considered the real negative one, falls in the South sector in 2017.
The 5 Yellow sickness star is in South in 2017. The fourth “bad” sector to not disturb in 2017, year of the Fire Rooster, is South.
With this one, it is also recommended to not travel using the South-North axis if possible. This is very true for the sensitive month when South and North are activated. Keep following my monthly blog and I will highlight those…
Good Feng Shui : the auspicious sectors & directions for 2017.
Now, what about the auspicious sectors for 2017? Well yes there are some! There is a Yin to every Yang, and vice-versa. Time to see how the other directions and sectors, or “palaces” in Feng Shui, fare in 2017.
To determine the auspicious directions and sectors, we are interested into the combination of the annual Flying Stars and the Men Dun Jia plate/chart for this year. Don’t be impressed by the name here. The Qi Men Dun Jia is another form of Chinese metaphysics. It used to be a war oracle but can now be used to predict where the good Chi is for a specific place and time. It is therefore useful to combine it with the other predictive oracle that is the Flying Stars.
The 8 Flying Star that boost wealth and money falls, very ironically, in the East sector this year. As the East is affected by both the Sui Po and San Sha, we can’t really activate it for wealth. So this opportunity is lost somehow…It is only a silver lining if your bedroom or main door is in the East, as it will mitigate the negative effects a bit.
As far as the Qi Men Dun Jia is concerned, the good and bad sectors in 2017, year of the Fire Rooster are as follow. South and Southwest have good doors, but weak structures. One can sleep there, but not activate them for good luck. West has a good door and structure but for women only; and it is equally tricky to activate due to the Tai Sui of the year. Northeast, finally, had a good door and structure. It is the “best” sector as far as this oracle is concerned, and it is also not affected by the year afflictions…In flying star it also receives the Star 4, considered lucky for love life and education.
Northeast is the best sector to spend time in, or for your main door to be in 2017, Rooster year. And so congratulation Northeast, you were the loser last year and are the winner this year! This is only fair after all…
All the good and bad directions and sectors for 2017, Rooster year.
When combining all aspects: annual afflictions, Qimen and flying stars, we end up with this ranking from best to worse:
- Northeast is the only real “winner” this year
The following are a mixed of influences. They are ok to stay in, but not ideal for long term activations:
The following are severely affected:
There is a total reversal compared to last year. In 2016, Monkey year, East was the best sector and Northeast the worse. In 2017, Rooster year, Northeast is now the best and East the worse…
Annual Feng Shui afflictions: what not to do at home?
What should we do to respect the annual afflictions? Well, mostly left them undisturbed: it is as simple as that…So ideally, do NOT renovate in those areas in 2017. If you have to, avoid East, West and South the most and choose a good month to do the renovation when the negative energies are less active in those sectors. If you absolutely need to do renovations, contact me so I can calculate for a good day and month for your house and Bazi chart to avoid problems.
If a building next to your home or companies is situated in the East, West or South directions and has work done on it this year, it is not ideal and you might not get away without some nasty effects. A Feng Shui consultation for your place can help you by providing solutions to try buffering those energies and stimulate the good areas.
Outside of this, avoid making loud noises in those sectors: loud music, slamming doors, banging on the walls with a hammer etc. As for not facing them, in all honesty, not a big deal and at some point you will face them in your home anyway…
What if you sleep or work in those sectors? While it is not ideal, you can still get away with it if you respect the same rules. With so many sectors afflicted in 2017, it is hard to avoid sleeping in one! If the room you sleep in however received the right Chi for you and has the right colours, you should buffer the negative influences. We can also determine this through a combined Feng Shui & Bazi consultation.
When you have disturbed them by mistake, the best is to leave your place for a couple of hours just after you did, or even better go on holiday until the effect dissipate…But once activated, it is random luck to know if it going to hit you or not. Best is then to focus on good deeds and paying your homage to the divinities you believe in: it can help. So try to respect them, but don’t obsess either: technically we offend some sectors one in while during the year.
Buying properties with the right Feng Shui in 2017
How do these annual afflictions: Tai Sui, Sui Po, San Sha and Flying stars affect a property that you could buy during the Monkey year? Ideally, you would avoid in this order:
- A property with the main door located in East or West. South is ok-isk.
- A property with the main façade in East or West.
Those are the main two ones to avoid, if possible. Additionally you might want to avoid the following IF you move in and sleep in this house in 2017.
- A property with the main bedroom in East, West or South unless it is excellent for your Bazi
- A property that will need renovation in those sectors, if you live in it at the same time
It is of course advanced knowledge to assess the quality of a new property and the pros and cons that it will bring for you, besides the façade, main door and master bedroom placement. Investing into the proper Feng Shui setup can manifest a better luck and real opportunities for decades to come…Don’t bargain with such investment and always have a Feng Shui master help to select the best property for you!
Keep in mind that if you buy such a property this year – let’s say with the façade in the East and main door in South – you will still avoid the potential negative effects if you do not move in during this Rooster year. 2018 is another story altogether…
