Wood Element: liver and gallbladder-nourishing foods in Chinese medicine

🌿 General Principles in TCM for the Liver

  1. Flavor

    • Sour flavor → enters the Liver channel, nourishes Liver yin and blood, helps astringe and regulate.

    • Moderation is key: too much sour can overly contract and damage the Liver qi’s smooth flow.

  2. Color (Five Elements theory)

    • Green foods resonate with the Liver (Wood element).

  3. Nature (temperature/energy of food)

    • Cooling foods help clear Liver heat, calm irritability, and benefit the eyes.

    • Gentle sweet foods nourish qi and blood, supporting the Liver’s blood-storing function.

  4. Functions to support

    • Nourish blood & yin → Liver stores blood; deficiency leads to dizziness, dry eyes, tendon issues.

    • Soothe Liver qi → prevent stagnation (stress, frustration, digestive upset).

    • Clear heat & drain fire when there are symptoms like red eyes, headaches, irritability.

🐚 General Principles in TCM for the Gallbladder

  1. Flavor

    • Bitter flavor → enters the Gallbladder and Liver, clears damp-heat, aids bile flow, supports digestion.

  2. Color

    • Also linked to green in the Wood element system.

  3. Nature of food

    • Light, cleansing foods (not greasy, not heavy) support bile secretion and smooth digestion.

    • Aromatic foods (that move qi) help relieve Gallbladder stagnation.

  4. Functions to support

    • Resolve damp-heat → prevent gallstones, jaundice, bitter taste in mouth.

    • Assist decision-making and courage (Gallbladder in TCM relates to mental clarity and decisiveness).

    • Keep bile flowing smoothly → by avoiding excess greasy, rich, oily foods.
